Another Little Girl

This is Bella's Christmas portrait, taken by her other mother Anne, on an iPhone. Pretty good eh? I thought I would throw her a bone because she will be going to doggy day care soon so we can go and see Violet again. We gave Maria the day off yesterday so she could get some much needed rest. I wonder how different the newborn will look today. I am gonna try and talk my son into a side by side picture of baby and him. It sounds easier than it will be, believe me.

We (G and I) are up in the air about what our grandparent names should be. Should we let the kid decide? I really want something more unique than grandma. I suggested Twinkle because it's the first lullaby they usually learn but it hasn't gotten rave reviews. Maria loves it but that's about it. I want something that is fun for a kid, like happy or sunny or pickles or I don't know. Mimi is a favorite but that would just be copying lots of friends. I guess I could have a worse dilemma than this!!! Maybe just T and G. I went to college with a Mini. Then there is Toto (a dog), Tata (a stripper) or Titi (I guess I don't have to embellish that!!!!) Like G says, we have time.

My MIL was always Grandma, then the last grand child was born and she is about 11 years behind the previous grandchild. Anyway the last one (Hannah) started calling her Darlin' and it stuck! I don't know of a better name. How sweet to hear.

How about looking to other cultures. Remember you aren't the only set of grans so maybe simply grandma Tommy, and Grandpa G will surfice.

I know younger parents offer their kids first name basis, so kids won't say mom or dad, instead John and Mary and same with the grandparents too!

How about just Honey?

The first grandchild born into a family on my husband's side gets to name the grandparents. This tradition is so ingrained that the grandparents eagerly wait to find out their names.

You published the pic of Peter right before you showed the pic of beautiful Violet. As soon as I saw Violet's pic, I was amazed by how much she looked like her dad. I'd say she leans towards the Kanes so far with appearance.

No kids yet, but I toyed with the idea of my parents "grandparent names" being Mister and Lady. no one else agreed. My dad does NOT want to be "grandpa" because he's not old enough yet, he says. And now is considering just using his first name. I think it's a bit lame, personally.
I think it would be fun to just go with whatever the kid comes up with. Like, however they decide to pronounce "grandma", go with that. although it could be dangerous since my nephew called my husband "Kunka P-hoe" for a while...

Maybe Gordon can just be "G" or "G-pa?" and you Could be "G.T." for Grandma Tommy?

Twinkle could end up sounding like Tinkle and I don't think you'd like that ;-)

You do have "time" on your side..but in the meantime, 'be" Twinkle and G.G. (grandpa gordon)....and when Violet is old enough to babble and talk...and she calls you something else (which, at that point, you will think is the GREATEST NAME in the whole world...even Tinkle could stick and be cute!)....and you will, then, have your official names.

Just enjoy the ride; it is joyous xoxoxo

You've waited so long for this grandchild why would you not want everyone to know who you are to her? Grandma, Nanna, Nonnie, Grandmother immediately let everyone know you're special to her and not too many people can be called these names. Enjoy it - anyone can be called Twinkels or Darlin etc.

Here is what I gave thought to today. How about you being 'Cookie'? I think it would be a perfect name for you on so many levels...lol...plus you are sweet in your own way.

What I cannot stand is when your own children start referring to you as grandma and grandpa when their child is born. Where did the mom and dad go?

I didn't want to have the same name as my former mother-in-law and didn't like a lot of the more common ones- Nana(that's the dog in Peter Pan), Oma (sounds like I should be meditating), Granny (sheesh, Mimi (that horrible painted up woman from the Drew Cary show?). I made up a list of about 16 names that I could live with, including some ridiculous ones that I thought would be easy to eliminate. I told my daughter to decide. She picked Cupcake. That was on the easy to eliminate list.

Violet is going to call you a variation of what ever the people around you call you. Violet may have perfect diction and you'll end up being "Grandmother". Decide what you want it to be and you'll get a variation of that that is yours alone.

I vote for T-ma and G-pa. And then I also like Queen and Ace. I like being Marma and the other grandmother is Grandma.
