The Best Laid Plan

Okay, you tell me;

there are four parts of four links that are double sided and not sewn down. The example in this photo is the aqua one in the top center to the left. I thought originally that it would be cool to double side some and make them two dimensional and quilt under them which is what I did, but now, when the actual quilting is happening, I didn't realize that I couldn't quilt the link part itself without sewing it down. Now it stands out like a sore thumb. I think it looks weird and I think I want to sew them down and forget the dimensional thing at all. What say you?

Hate to tell you this, but I too think it looks like it isn't finished. Is there any way you could hand quilt it so it has the same design as the others, but then wouldn't have to be stitched down?

I love the design and I know you'll work through this slight hiccup.

Love the quilt too, but I think it needs to be sewn.

I think it might look fine if you left the whole side undone. From the top of the rust loop to the top of the purple loop. But you are right with that side half quilted it looks unfinished. Do you have a machine with a free arm that you could stitch those loose pieces in the same or even different pattern? That might work too. Either way even if you just sew them all down it looks great and I love the idea.

Have been reading your blog for awhile and am now a fan. I think it looks unfinished if you don't quilt it and love the whole 3d thing so I think you need to bite the bullet and hand quilt it.

It would look much nicer quilted. It looks like a small hand quilting project.

I don't think you're one for much extra embellishment - but, what if you tried a little something like beads or some creative touches to make the 3D effect even more striking instead of looking a bit unfinished? Just my 2cents...

I like the idea of embellishing that one ring

Tommy! Your work is amazing - I'm proud of have known you back in one of those first technique classes in WI...but you were already well advanced then, and on the cruise!

Not much quilting happening here, but lots of novel writing (wordpress.thehistorylady.com) at my house, and figure skating from wee Katie who still sleeps w/her quilt from you. Gxxx

Maybe some hand quilting w/stitches ala Laura W...French knots and the like. Some bead might give it a bit of bling.
